March Madness
Every March, as the madness of college basketball ensues, we head down to Panama City Beach, FL with our students for a week-long conference called Big Break. Some of you may be familiar with PCB—it is the second most popular spring break destination for college students— runner up to Cancun, Mexico. It’s known to be party central during spring break.
The heart behind having this conference is to bring the light of God's love to the beaches of PCB. During the afternoons, our students got the chance to go out onto the beaches and connect with all of the other students there. We approached spring-breakers by telling them we were with a Christian conference and wanted to hear their opinions on a number of topics including their perspective on God. We were genuinely interested in listening and hearing their thoughts, and if the opportunity arose, we shared how Christ was relevant to our lives.
Me and the Boston girls
As you sit down and have a conversation, you are reminded that they are just normal people dealing with the same issues in life that you are. One particular afternoon, I (Tara) was with Ilta, a Wellesley student, as we approached a guy on the beach. Jimmy was willing to talk with us, even though he was hesitant at first. We quickly found out that he was in Theta Chi at the University of Alabama and was in PCB with a few of his fraternity brothers. Over the next 2 hours, we learned so much about Jimmy: he was passionate for Christ in high school, but his faith had dwindled in the past few years. He had some major trust issues with Christians and the church in his past; he had been abandoned by some important mentors in his life and saw a lot of hypocrisy in his church back home. He told us that he missed having God in his life.
We were able to ask Jimmy a lot of questions and help him process through a lot of thoughts that he had. He said we were different from other Christians he knew, thanked us for talking with him, and said he would be interested in connecting with Cru back on campus. Please pray for him as he seeks to follow God more!
Thankful for you,
